(Austria-Hungarian soldiers executing Serbian women) After invading Serbia in August 1914 Austria-Hungary could not successfully put a stop to Serbian resistance. However, the entry of the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria into the war proved to be enough of a push to finally allow the Central Powers to overtake Serbia. Bulgaria especially, as the entire country harboured bitter feelings toward Serbia after their embarrassing defeat during the Second Balkan War in 1913. Moreover, Bulgaria occupied a strategically important position in regards to the location of the Serbian flank.
As the war commenced the Serbian army had over 420,000 men, most of which were recent veterans. Nevertheless, Serbia repeatedly requested help from the other allied powers, but by the time they finally arrived the situation was too far gone. The late arrival was attributed to a number of reasons, most notably a growing number of urgent conflicts on the Western Front and continuing attempts to persuade Bulgaria to join the Allies, which would negate the need for intervention.
An alliance with Bulgaria and the Allied Powers would never be realised. On 21 September 1915 Bulgaria began mobilizing troops on behalf of the Central Powers. This would seal Serbia’s fate. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers from Bulgaria, the German Empire, and Austria-Hungary under Field Marshal August von Mackensen began their attack on Serbia on the 7th of October. The Germans and Austro-Hungarians launched an extensive artillery barrage during the opening hours. Bulgaria would begin their two-pronged attack several days later. After breaking through the Vardar Front, the situation in Serbia became hopeless.

Deep stained pain that I had dreamt
Flaunted demise, life’s punishment
Leaving little strength to seal this wretched tomb
